Frequently Asked Questions
I have boxed before, can I just join the competitive team?
No, everyone must go through Boxing Club and complete tryouts to join the competitive team whether you have fighting experience or no fighting experience.
How do I make the competitive team?
We primarily are looking for athletes who are tough and willing to work hard. You should be in good shape, especially cardiovascular wise. If you able to handle club practice conditioning, you are in good shape for tryouts. We also assess your technique and potential during sparring sessions and club practices. We do take in consideration your attendance record!
What do I need?
At the beginning of club, all you need is a pair of running shoes, workout clothing, a participation agreement, and your PSU ID. Later on, you will need a mouth guard and Mexican style hand wraps that are 180 inches long (which we can also sell to you for your convenience).
Do you need experience?
No, experience does not matter to us. We teach everyone at the same pace and we start from the basics. Most of the people currently on the team started with little or no fighting experience.
Does it matter if I am a freshman or a senior?
No, we welcome everyone to come workout and learn how to box. Everyone starts from scratch, and age doesn't matter.
Can girls join?
Yes, girls are encouraged to come to club boxing as well as tryout for the competitive team. This is a co-ed club, and we are always looking for more female boxers.
What is a club practice like?
A typical club practice is broken into 2 parts (about 45 min each): conditioning and skills. Conditioning involves distance, sprints, and incline running. In strength, we put you through an overall body workout using your body weight and it can become pretty intense. The skills portion is where your mind gets the workout. We will start with the basics and the lessons will get progressively more advanced as time goes on.
Do I have to tryout?
No, if you just want to come to club and get a good workout while learning how to box, that's fine with us. Trying out is completely OPTIONAL.
Where can I sign up?
At the beginning of Fall semester, there will be an involvement fair for all of the sports clubs at Penn State. At our Penn State boxing booth, we will be able to answer questions and get your information. If you miss the fair, come to one of the practices and talk to us.
How can I prepare for Boxing Club?
The most basic way to prepare for Boxing Club is to run and do push-ups. The first thing that will give out when you are in a fight is your legs. Also, our conditioning program will be very taxing to the upper body as well. If you do both these things, you will have an easier time.
